Hey guys! I’m back home from attending the Chicago Alternative Comics Expo (CAKE). I got to debut two new minis, Rookie Moves and More Diary Comics (from a relative nobody). I gave a bunch to John P. so stay tuned for their availability at the Spit and a Half distro.
Comics critic Rob Clough has a well-written review on his blog, High-Low. Check it out if you have a second.
Anyway, I met a lot of wonderful people!
I was lucky to have the best tablemate ever! Never a dull moment with Andy (A.T. Pratt)—he’s funny, ingenious and unpretentious. Many fans came to take his photo and will annoyedly be cropping me out of the shot. Check out his pop-up comics, character socks and art here.
Tom Van Deusen is my new comics bestie. I pretty much spent the entire weekend with him uh, completely sober and participating in respectable activities. I assume you’ve read his books…if you haven’t, you’re missing out. They are ALL good reads…hilarious yet beautifully drawn. I can’t wait to see him again at Short Run in Seattle!
Jim Woodring is a huge influence who pretty much got me into comics in my 20s (along with Peter Bagge). I was so nervous to meet him and the first thing I blurted out was the exact thing I never want to say: “I’m a big fan of yours!”. His new book had sold out so I bought Fran, which I didn’t have, and I was so flabbergasted that I forgot to pay for it, returning with profuse apologies, to which he responded with a shrug and a gesture towards the Fantagraphics cashier. I expected him to be eccentric and introverted but instead found him to be extremely cool and frighteningly intelligent. We are pretending to talk about changing a car tire in this photo.
Tom introduced me to Gina Wynbrandt and she was nice enough to take me to nice dive bars and satisfy my fried chicken cravings! Again, no introduction necessary and if you don’t know who she is then you are a fool! Buy her book now!
– Gasp! I’m Short Run Seattle’s Dash Grant winner! This means they are helping me publish Malarkey #3 which will debut at this year’s festival!
– Whoot! I have a comic in the upcoming anthology Sweaty Palms #2. Stay tuned for the Kickstarter this July!
– Woah! The Illustrated PEN (PEN America) invited me to contribute a comic to be featured in November. It will have juicy stuff about growing up Catholic—I guess I’ll be ruffling some feathers again!
– Sob! Right after it was covered in an eloquent and thoughtful review in The Tiny Report, Foggy Notions sold out. It is currently unavailable at the Hic and Hoc store. If you would like to get a copy, hound them to get some more! I’ll also have a few measly copies at Short Run.
That’s all for now. Thanks for reading if you’ve gotten this far!
